About the Lake Wallenpaupack Area
Lake Wallenpaupack could be called the heartbeat of northeastern Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains. This manmade lake covers 5700 acres, has 52 miles of shoreline and is over 13 miles in length.
Residents and tourists alike take advantage of the boating, water skiing, canoeing, fishing, and other activities available on the lake.
Lake Wallenpaupack is owned by PP&L(Pennsylvania Power and Light Co.) and has been a hydroelectric source of energy for decades. Its claim to fame, however, lies in being one of Pennsylvania's major vacation areas.
Every winter, people flock to the Pocono Mountains to ski. Tanglwood Ski Area, Elk Mountain, Camelback, Big Bear (at Masthope), Jack Frost & Big Boulder, and Shawnee Mountain ski areas are all nearby.
Lake Wallenpaupack and northeast PA also offers fine dining, golfing, theatre (movies and live productions), horseback riding, and river rafting. Visit a zoo at Claws-n-Paws, play games and eat hot dogs at the local amusement parks, go hiking or fishing state parks, brush up on local history at the museums and historical sites-- you will find that the greater Lake Wallenpaupack region offers a plethora of activities for every age group.
Curiosity and gift shops are scattered about the area. Downtown Hawley offers small town charm; nearby Milford is like taking a step back in time. The Route Six Plaza (and also Main Street) in Honesdale has many shops and businesses to meet your needs. Mall enthusiasts will be pleased to find Scranton's Steamtown and Viewmont Malls, Wilkes-Barre's Wyoming Valley Mall, Stroudsburg's Stroud Mall, and various shopping centers, like the Dickson City Crossings, nearby as well. Target now has two local stores-- in Dickson City and Stroudsburg. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (one hour's drive, in Avoca) and the interstate highway system keeps major destinations like New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston within easy reach.
